The Maremma region is an area of Italy bordering the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas. It comprises part of southwestern Tuscany – Maremma Livornese and Maremma Grossetana (the latter in the province of Grosseto) – and part of northern Lazio (in the province of Viterbo and Rome on the border of the region).
It was traditionally populated by the Butteri, cattle breeders who until recently used horses with a distinctive style of saddle. Once unhealthy because of its many marshes, Maremma was drained under the fascist regime and repopulated with people from other Italian regions, notably the Veneto.
The region is instead one of the very few territories left in Italy that remains true to its ancient peasant roots, uncontaminated by the tourist explosion.
Maremma is unique because of the variety of its territory: blue sea, long beaches, black rock, hills covered with woods, marshes and flat lands, green hills and natural thermal baths.
Maremma is not just culture and landscapes; it is also a region rich in typical products to be tasted and savoured while drinking a good glass of wine. Sea, hills and mountains melt perfectly in its food, the acquacotta soup is a just one example.
Punta Ala is a hamlet of the town of Castiglione della Pescaia, in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany, Italy.
The town developed on the northern slope of the Punta Ala headland surrounded by a rocky coastline, full of beautiful bays and coves with crystal-clear water.
In the sixteenth century the area of Punta Ala became a place of strategic importance for defense against raids by pirates both in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and in the Principality of Piombino. For this reason there were built several towers and fortifications partially restored but that still characterize the landscape.
The interior looks hilly, dominated by the typical Mediterranean vegetation and offers tourists and visitors the opportunity to visit the ruins of ancient settlements of the Etruscans and the Roman, medieval villages and the many nature reserves and protected areas.
Punta Ala is now a popular tourist destination and an oasis of peace. The fascinating area is rich in wines that accompany traditional products such as cheese and nicely bagged.
In addition to the famous tourist harbour and the Yacht Club, which saw the birth of the prestigious Luna Rossa, the territory and the town lends itself to many leisure activities such as windsurfing, sailing and diving, horse riding and mountain bike along gentle paths that develop through beautiful cork and pine forests to reach the sea.
