Tuscany Versilia Coast

The Versilia is the area right along the Tuscan coast in the northwestern edge of the province of Lucca. It is widely known and popular for the fashionable resorts along its Riviera, with numerous night clubs attracting visitors for its active night life during the summer.

Why it is called Versilia? It is called after the name of the river that runs down from Seravezza down to Forte dei Marmi!

The main cities in the Versilia are Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi, Camaiore, Massarosa, Seravezza and Stazzema although the area spreads north along the coast and runs into Massa and Carrara. Seravezza and Stazzema are not along the coast but on the hills that slope up to the Apuan Alps, which sit right behind the coast and separate Versilia from Garfagnana and are called the “Upper Versilia”.

It is easy to get to the Versilia and its beaches, as both the rail line and A12 highway run parallel to the coast. With public transportation you would take the train from Florence passing through Lucca to get to any of the coastal towns of the Versilia or take buses from Lucca; the beaches are then a short walk away.

Forte Dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi is a great seaside resort (the area is blue flag certified), and is the ideal place for both a family vacation as well as the more elite tourism thanks to the many famous seafood restaurants, bars and nightclubs not to mention some of the most upmarket villas.

This popular seaside resort located within easy driving distance of Florence on the Tyrrhenian Sea has a historic port, famous for its export of Italian marble and wonderful avenues for a relaxing evening stroll.

The nearby seaside town of Versilia is just a few minutes drive from Forte dei Marmi and is well known for its beautiful long sandy beach and shady pinewoods. Versilia is also famous for its Liberty-style seaside promenade lined with exclusive boutiques and cafés which are perfect for idly drinking coffee and people-watching.

The nearby Apuane Alps are ideal for anyone who loves mountain sports including trekking and climbing. They contain over 200 caves including Tanone di Torano which is one of the most visited. The Apuane Alps are best known for their marble quarries, ancient mills and quaint villages.

Another charming town in the area is Pietrasanta, which is just 10km from Forte dei Marmi. Dating back to the early 1200s, Pietrasant has some important architecture including the Church of San Martino and the Fortress built by Castruccio Castracani. Furthermore, with numerous art galleries and working artists from all over the world that gather here, the town has a very characteristic and charming atmosphere.
